Becky’s baby was born in the early hours of the next morning. She had screamed and struggled throughout the long night, but just as it seemed her strength was ebbing, her child was born. She lay back against the pillows, cheeks wet with tears as she asked, ‘What is it – is it all right?’

‘Yes,’ Evangeline assured her. ‘You have a beautiful little girl, Mrs Morgan. She is healthy and quite big – so that’s why she caused you some pain.’

‘Can I hold her?’ Becky asked and struggled to sit up against the pillows as she strained to see the baby. Maggie had been bathing her and brought her back, the smears of blood washed from her face, and cosily wrapped in a large towel. ‘She is beautiful, isn’t she?’ Becky looked at Maggie tearfully. ‘My baby…’

‘Yes, Becky,’ Maggie said and smiled. ‘She is gorgeous. You’re very lucky to have her.’

‘Yes, I am – and you as my friend.’ Becky reached a hand out and Maggie squeezed it.

‘Well, I should go,’ Evangeline said after she’d finished tending to Becky. ‘You will be fine now, Mrs Morgan – and Maggie is perfectly able to care for you both, I think. I need some rest, but I will pop in later to see how you’re both doing.’ She shook her head as Maggie walked to the bedroom door with her. ‘I can see myself out – you know what to do now?’

‘Yes,’ Maggie assured her. ‘Thank you for coming. You were wonderful.’

‘I just did my job as it should be done,’ Evangeline said with a slight smile. ‘It was a long night and I should sleep – but if you need me, just send word.’

‘Yes, of course,’ Maggie nodded. ‘I don’t think we shall – mother and baby seem fine, very healthy.’

‘Yes, she has improved a great deal of late,’ Evangeline said. ‘I suppose it is because she now believes her husband is alive.’ Becky had told Evangeline that her husband was in hospital, explaining that he’d lost his memory. Maggie wondered at the wisdom of it, because nothing was certain yet, but Becky had made up her mind that she had found the man she loved and was just as sure he would marry her when he was better and had recovered his memory.

‘Yes, I am sure that made a big difference,’ Maggie agreed.

‘Has her husband made any improvement – his memory returned at all?’

‘No, I fear not – but he is getting better. The nurses told us that he now looks forward to Becky’s visits and his health is gradually improving, so we have hope.’

‘Hope is everything,’ Evangeline said. ‘I will see you later.’
